Breakouts: When To Buy

  index

  1. A breakout into an overbought price level as measured in the historical context of an oscillator. This is almost always a bad trade. $SPY breaking out into a 65 RSI is not the same as it breaking out of a long term price range, to all time highs over a 50 RSI.
  2. Buying a breakout without understanding where key price resistance levels are coming from is a bad idea.
  3. Buying breakouts against the current market trend usually does not work.  Buying them in the direction of the overall trend has better odds of success.
  4. When you buy a breakout and it fails and falls back through the lows of the previous day, it is time to get out. If the lows of the breakout day are held, there is a good chance of a new range and new trend.
  5. Buying on the anticipation of a breakout before it actually happens is usually a bad idea. You should look for a confirmed breakout for better odds of success.
  6. Chasing a break out after a multiple day move is not a good idea.  You need a profit cushion to enable a longer term hold.
  7. Buying breakouts in commodities and high growth stocks has a much better probability of success than in big cap stocks or indexes.

10 of the Worlds Most Powerful Trading Rules

Trading Habits

1. A winning trading system must either be designed to have a large winning percentage of trades or big wins and small losses.

2. Your trading system must be built on quantifiable facts not opinions.

3. Start with the weekly price chart to establish the long term trend, and then work down through the daily and hourly charts to trade in the direction of that trend. The odds are better if you are trading in the direction of the long term trend.

4. The more times a support or resistance level is tested, the greater the odds that it will be broken. Old resistance can become the new support, and the old support may become the new resistance.

5. Moving averages can quantify trends and create signals for entries, exits, and trailing stops.

6. Bull Markets have no long term resistance, and Bear Markets have no long term support.

7. “The larger the market gaps, the greater the odds of continuation and a trend.” – Linda Raschke

8. “The last hour often tells the truth about how strong a trend truly is. “Smart” money shows their hand in the last hour, continuing to mark positions in their favor. As long as a market is having consecutive strong closes, look for an up-trend to continue. The up trend is most likely to end when there is a morning rally first, followed by a weak close.” – Linda Raschkee

9. Above the 200 day is where bulls create uptrends. Bad things happen below the 200 day; downtrends, distribution, bear markets, crashes, and bankruptcies.

10. “It is much easier to watch a few than many.” – Jesse Livermore

MGTX, una nueva

MeiraGTx announces pricing of initial public offering

Founded in 2015, MeiraGTx is a New York-based quickly expanding gene therapy specialist company. The clinical stage gene therapy company specialises in developing various novel gene therapy treatments for a range of inherited and acquired disorders. In particular, disorders of the eye and salivary gland and Neurodegenerative Diseases are their core focus of specialization. In ophthalmology, they have four candidates in various clinical stages. Its drug candidates include a number of adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors that carry processed genes, and are being tested and developed for all three disease areas on which the company focuses. Some of the conditions in which trials moved to Phase 1/2 are retinitis pigmentosa, achromatopsia and xerostomia.

The gene therapy AAV-RPE65 received FDA and EMA designation of orphan status for the treatment of Leber’s Congenital Amaurosis (‘LCA). Retinitis pigmentosa (‘RP) is a group of inherited retinal disorders (‘IRDs) which represent the most common genetic cause of blindness. There are currently no approved treatments for RP. Achromatopsia is a disorder of the retina and is often confused with the other more commonly found color vision deficiency (popularly known as color blindness). In color blindness a person can perceive color but have difficulty in distinguishing between certain colors, such as red and green. Achromatopsia (alternatively known as achromatism), is an autosomal recessive genetic disorder affecting one of the four genes: CNGA3, CNGB3, GNAT2, PDE6C etc The affected person’s condition may be characterized by a partial or total absence of color vision. Those with complete achromatopsia fail to perceive any colors. On the contrary, incomplete achromatopsia is a milder form that allows some color discrimination. Globally an estimated 1 in 30,000 people are affected by this genetic condition. Xerostomia is a disorder of the salivary glands that turns into a chronic and debilitating condition in which saliva production is affected. Among the potential causes are radiation therapy for head and neck cancer and certain autoimmune diseases.

MeiraGTx recently priced its IPO at $15.10, at the middle of the $14-$16 range that the company initially floated. It started trading in NASDAQ with the ticker MGTX. Through the 5M ordinary shares the company raised ~$75M. The amount is a little less than the originally expected $86. Nevertheless, the amount will be necessary at this crucial development stage. Most of its drug candidates are in early phases and the net proceeds will infuse a necessary breadth into the processing of in-license, acquire or investing in additional businesses, technologies, products or assets.
