Current statement on Uralkali comments
A competitor of our Potash and Magnesium Products business unit – Russian Uralkali – has today announced its exit from the sales organisation BPC which it jointly operates with the Belarusian Belaruskali. The company wants to market its products in future via its own sales organisation.
This announcement in combination with further statements from Uralkali, which cannot be verified by us, caused significant irritations. The prices for potash fertilizers spread in the media are not understandable for us and, from our point of view, do not reflect the current supply and demand situation.
The positive medium- and long-term trends for potash fertilizers remain unchanged. A comprehensive valuation of the current situation is not possible for us at present. We will monitor further developments very closely.

Integer does not believe that is a dramatic game changer in the business. The announcements are in line with Integer Research’s long held view that a lower potash price is necessary to stimulate demand and discourage new entrants. Prices might fall in the near term, but we do not expect to see a price war. The breakup of BPC still leaves over 50% of global capacity in the hands of two marketing companies – Canpotex and Uralkali Trading – down from around 65% before the announcement, and it remains an oligopoly business. The potash industry has long avoided cost-based pricing and it remains in no producer’s financial interests. The price only needs to drop to a level which will discourage new entrants to have the desired effect.

El análisis coincide a grandes rasgos -no significa que sea acertado- con lo que había comentado en el post inicial, debe haber equilibrio entre oferta y demanda, a 300 usd difíclimente puede haber expansiones.
Hay varias escenarios, ataque de BHP Billiton a Mosaic, opa guarrilla y apalabrada de Uralkali a Belaruskali, pero no veo suicidio colectivo de todo el sector y los rusos como mucho pueden controlar el 50% del mercado, mucho pero no todo....
